Lorenza DeCapite Obituary
Lorenza "Loretta" (Cioccio) DeCapite, 98, passed away peacefully Tuesday, June 5, 2018, at QLS-West Haven Manor, Washington Township. Born Jan. 4, 1920, in Donora, she was a daughter of the late Giovanni "John" and Natalina (Monaco) Cioccio. At the age of two, Loretta and her family returned to Rocca Pia Abruzzo, Italy, where her father's family lived. A few years later, they relocated to her mother's hometown of Rivisondoli, Abruzzo, Italy, where she stayed until the age of 17. While in Italy, Loretta attended school and recalled reading Dante Alighieri's Inferno for class studies. During the winter months, she would help her mother prepare hot meals for the avid skiers that would frequent the Rivisondoli slopes. She returned to the United States Oct. 21, 1937, on the SS Vulcania. After a short stay in Ellis Island's dormitories, she and her family moved back to Donora, where she lived until her marriage to Benjamin DeCapite April 10, 1948. They bought a house on Sycamore Street in Vandergrift, where she resided until her death. Loretta was a devoted housewife, mother and grandmother. She had very talented hands; she was always sewing, knitting or crocheting beautiful items worn and used by her family and friends, even to this day. Loretta had a passion for cooking and baking. Her homemade pasta and sauce, Easter bread, cream puffs, Italian bread rolls and ricotta cheesecakes would always make mouths water, and will be dearly missed. Loretta was a member of St. Gertrude Catholic Church since her arrival in Vandergrift. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Benjamin; and siblings, Armand (Jane) Cioccio, Daniel (Josephine) Cioccio and Angelina Cioccio. Loretta is survived by her children, Mary Jane (Robert) George, of Allegheny Township, and Dennis Robert (Linda) DeCapite, of Leechburg; granddaughters, Michele R. George, Lauren R. DeCapite and Christine E. DeCapite; great-grandchildren, Trent DeCapite and Jackson and Braxton Roberts; brother, William (Marilyn) Cioccio, of Elizabeth; and many nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 7, 2018, in the BRADY-CURRAN FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION SERVICES INC., 429 Franklin Ave., Vandergrift.
