1935 - 2017

Joseph I. Weinschenk Jr., 82, of New Castle, passed away the evening of March 19, 2017, at UPMC Jameson Hospital. Born Jan. 13, 1935, in New Castle, he was the son of the late Joseph Sr. and Mildred Doyle Weinschenk. Surviving at home is his beloved wife of 47 years, the former Barbara Stull, whom he married March 6, 1970. Joseph had attended Mercersburg Academy and later earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in horticulture from Cornell University. He served his country as a ROTC commissioned member of the Air Force. Joseph was assigned to the KC97 Lockbourne AFB in Columbus, Ohio, where he flew as a tanker refueling pilot. He left active duty and joined the 911th Pittsburgh Air Reserve Unit (MAC) C-119, C-123 and C-124 units in Pittsburgh. He then worked as the owner of Weinschenk Farms. Joseph retired as an unemployment compensation claims examiner for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry. He was a member of F&AM Mahoning Lodge No. 243, AASR Valley New Castle, Syria Shrine and Sojourners of Lockbourne AFB in Ohio. Joseph also belonged to Savannah United Methodist Church and enjoyed reading. In addition to his wife, Joseph is survived by his sons, Joseph Weinschenk III and wife Debbie, of Ft. Worth, Texas, and Geoffrey Weinschenk and wife Lori, of Dubuque, Iowa; and grandchildren, Danielle, Alyssa and Joseph Weinschenk and Nicholas Lusser.
Services will be held at noon Friday at ED AND DON DECARBO FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATORY, 941 S. Mill St., New Castle, officiated by the Rev. Frederick Gilbert of Independent Methodist Church and the Rev. Michael Long of Savannah United Methodist Church. Interment will take place in Parkside Cemetery.
