James Farland Obituary

James Harold Farland SMSG Jim Farland (retired) passed quietly at home on Wednesday, October 22, 2008 after a long battle with cancer. He was 84. He was born on February 13, 1924 in Minneapolis, Minnesota to Jacob and Florence Farland. Jim attended Lincoln High School in Tacoma and graduated from Vancouver High School in 1942. He was a WWI veteran, retiring from the Air Force in 1963 and then worked as a machinist in Tacoma until his retirement. Jim was preceded in death by his younger brothers, Jake and Vern and wife of 52 years, Shirley Ray Farland (Fry). He is survived by his three children, Richard Dean Farland (and wife, Nancy) of Vancouver, daughter Joan Marie Blanchard (and husband, Mark) of Lakewood, and son James Mark Farland of Spanaway. Jim has 4 grandsons, Aaron and Robert Farland and Nathan and Thomas Blanchard as well as 12 nieces and nephews. Viewing will be possible on Friday, October 31 from 1:00 to 7:00 PM at Fir Lane Memorial Park located at 924 East 176th Street in Spanaway, Washington. A funeral service will be held at the Fir Lane Chapel, Saturday, November 1 at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations made in his name to the Franciscan Hospice.
