Vera Richards Obituary

Vera (Hayes) Richards A lifelong resident of Auburn for 96 years, Vera Richards, born April 16, 1914, passed away March 24, 2011 of a pulmonary disease. She lived a full, fun-filled, active, independent life. She was an avid reader, loved traveling, spending time with her family and friends, beating everyone at card games, and was always ready for a party. She belonged to the same bunco party group for over 35 years, and hadn't missed a super bowl party in 24 years. Equally spirited, Vera has always had a great love for thoroughbred horse racing, and was thrilled at the opportunity 2 years ago to join in a partnership of owning 3 race horses. Vera retired from Boeing in 1977. In the past she had been a docent and a volunteer at White River Museum and volunteered in other community activities. She was preceded in death by her husband Elmer Richards, her daughter Marcia Earlywine, and long time companion Elmer Chase. She is survived by her daughters Judy (Howard) Erickson and Kathy (Al) Hoppenrath, her stepchildren Gary (Deb) Chase and Helen Dani (Dale) Surdyk, 12 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, 11 great-great-grandchildren, and many, many friends. Vera was an awesome woman with a wonderful spirit and will be missed by all who were blessed to have known her. A visitation will be held, Friday, April 1, 2011 from 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Price Helton Funeral Home, 702 Auburn Way N., Auburn, WA. Funeral services will be held 12:00 PM Saturday April 2nd, also at Price Helton. Graveside services will be held 11:00 AM Monday, April 4th at Hillcrest Cemetery in Kent, WA. It was delightful having Vera join our Benchmark horseracing group. She loved the horses and was always there to cheer them on. The jockeys will have an extra spirit helping them in the future.

To all of Vera's family--How lucky you were to have had such a remarkable lady in your lives for so many years. Vera knew everyone in Auburn since about 1925! She enjoyed every minute of her life and never let any grass grow under her feet. I will remember all the fun we had, the places we went, and what a grand person I had a chance to know and love. I'm so glad she got her "Life's Story" done. I will miss Vera but will never forget that she touched my life.
