AGNES MCLOUGHLIN Obituary

Sister Agnes McLoughlin, OSF Sister Agnes McLoughlin, OSF, 93, (formerly Sister Agnes Cornelia) died in St. Ann Convent in Tacoma on November 9, 2013. She had been a professed member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia for 74 years. Sister Agnes was born in County Leitrim, Ireland. She entered the congregation in 1936 in Mallow, County Cork, and professed her first vows in 1939 at St. Joseph Academy in Pendleton, Oregon. Sister Agnes earned a B.S. in Elementary Education from Marylhurst College in 1949, a M.Ed. from Seattle University in 1963, and a M.A. in Anthropology from Eastern Oregon College in 1970. She ministered primarily in education on both elementary and secondary levels and in parish ministry. Sister Agnes' ministry in the Archdiocese of Seattle included teaching at St. Leo School and St. Charles School, both in Tacoma. She also served as a DRE at St. Leo Parish. From 1997-2001 she volunteered at St. Ann Convent in Tacoma. In 2005 she became a resident at St. Ann Convent, where she served in prayer ministry until her death. Sister Agnes also ministered in the Diocese of Spokane. She was part of the support staff at the Kairos House of Prayer and served at St. Joseph Orphanage. She was also a volunteer at St. Joseph Family Center. Sister Agnes ministered in several dioceses in Oregon. She ministered for many years in the Diocese of Portland, where she taught at St. Patrick School in Portland and St. James School in McMinnville. She also served at the Franciscan Spiritual Center, Our Lady of Angels Convent, and the Paulist Center Refugee Program, all in Portland. In the Diocese of Baker she taught at St. Francis Academy in Baker, Sacred Heart Academy in Klamath Falls, and St. Joseph Academy in Pendleton. She also worked for a time with the Nyssa Public School system. During her years in the Diocese of San Bernardino, Sister Agnes served in parish ministry at St. Thomas Parish in Riverside, St. Edward Parish in Corona, and Sts. Peter and Paul Parish in Alta Loma. Additional ministry experiences included working at the Mexican-American Cultural Center in San Antonio, Texas; St. Pius X Parish, Ephrata, Washington; St. John School, Wasco, California; Holy Rosary Parish, Lander, Wyoming; Neumann University, Aston, Pennsylvania; and as a caregiver for a family member in Jackson Heights, New York. Sister Agnes is survived by her nieces and nephews, and by her Franciscan family. Donations in her name can be made to the Sisters of St. Francis Foundation, 609 S. Convent Road, Aston, PA 19014. All services will be held at St. Ann Convent, 6602 S. Alaska Street, Tacoma, Washington. A vigil will be held on Wednesday, November 13, 2013 at 6:00pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, November 14, 2013 at 11:00am followed by burial at Calvary Cemetery. Please leave online condolences at www.gaffneycares.com. Sister taught me for both 6th and 7th grade....I am not sure they were easy years for her as we were a wild group. I am sure we tried her patience. In those days our class room size was about 45 to 50 students. A lot of work. But she was a great teacher and well liked. She will be missed.
