MELVIN MATHENA Obituary

Melvin Ray Mathena On June 12, 2016, at the age of 65, the Lord called Melvin Ray Mathena out of this life into His heaven. Mel was born in Auburn, Washington on November 15, 1950, the fourth of four sons to Thomas and Irene Mathena. After graduating from Kent Meridian HS, he joined the University of Washington ROTC and earned a Bachelor of Science in Fisheries. Pursuing his passion for flying, Mel continued his military career with the United States Air Force, rising to the rank of captain before accepting a job as a pilot with Delta Airlines in 1981. He enjoyed a fulfilling 34-year career before his retirement in 2015. Equally content with a pen or hammer in hand, Mel could be found studying Latin or working on a project in his shop. He was a perpetual student, curious about the world, its history and people. He had a fascination with the stars and loved a good campfire or game of cribbage. Mel was a lifelong athlete who enjoyed running, hiking, and rooting for his favorite Seattle teams. While his accomplishments were many, it was his utter devotion to and delight in his family that defined Mel. He was the heart of his large family and happiest when surrounded by his children and grandchildren. He liked a full calendar, always planning the next family adventure. Mel was ever-ready with timely advice or a curative hug and his door was always open. He will be sorely missed but what Mel instilled in his family and loved ones about faith, commitment to one another, and passion for living will endure and provide comfort. Beloved father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, he was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Gerald Thomas and Richard James. He is survived by his seven children and their spouses, their mother Leigh (Thompson) Mathena, eighteen grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and brother Arthur Mathena. A memorial service will be held on Friday, June 17th at 2:00 P.M. at Lutheran Church of the Cross in Kent. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to Lutheran Church of the Cross of Kent, WA, or to Air Warrior Courage Foundation.

My thoughts are with his familiar, I have awesome memories of camping trips and family gatherings and many other good times. He will be greatly missed. He's with his brothers and parents now and in good hands. He will be greatly missed by all.

It is with heavy heart I say good bye to Mel. We grew up together and we were more like brothers than double cousins. Sharing time in a play pen still in diapers to our early years of marriage, children and pursuing our careers. We continued to stay in touch throughout out the later years, both of us equally looking forward to seeing each other. He will be greatly missed but never forgotten. I pray for his children and think of them often. Love you guys.

Linda and I express our deepest sympathies for the family. Just does not seem that long ago that we shared time in high school and reunions.

My deepest sympathy is with the Mathena Family. Losing a loved one can be very difficult. With the love of family and friends as well as the words at 2 Thessalonians 4:14 will help you get thru this most difficult time.

Mel was my sons father-in-law and my son adored Mel. I didn't know Mel very well but it was obvious he was the treasured gem of the Mathena family. Prayers for the family.
