George and I crossed paths a number of times over the years as I grew up in Midland. Yes I remember the flatbed truck which he drove and the untold trips he made hauling lumber here and there. Most people don't know the name Baskett anymore, but they were an important part of the community of Midland. His father answered the fire phone for a number of years after Midland Volunteer Fire Department was formed as H.M.&L. in September 1942. It started in an old blacksmith shop on 97th Street behind the Midland Community Hall. His brother Steve was a former captain with Parkland Fire Dept and retired as a Fire Commissioner. I remember the pictures in the hardware store of all the Baskett family members logging experiences in the 30's & 40's. One such photo showed his sister Leona with a tree the diameter of a house loaded onto a logging truck. The Baskett family contributed and sacrificed a great deal for the betterment of the community of Midland. They are greatly missed.
