Harold Johnston Obituary

Harold B. Johnston M.D. F.A.P.A. Was born in Aberdeen, WA, April 21, 1924 to James Ray and Grace Brownell Johnston and passed away on June 4th, 2011. He attended the University of Washington and was a graduate of the University of Texas medical School at Galveston. He served his country during World War II as a captain and later becoming a major in the US Army. In 1950 he married Mary George, also of Aberdeen, and after an internship at Pierce County Hospital (now Puget Sound Hospital) he completed his residency in psychiatry at Tripler Hospital in Honolulu, HI. On his return from Hawaii, Harold started a private practice in psychiatry in Tacoma that lasted for more than 30 years. He and his wife Mary moved from Lakewood, where they had lived for many years, to Tacoma in 1979. Harold was a member of the American Medical Association, Washington State Medical Association and Pierce County Medical Society as well as a Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. After retirement Harold enjoyed his family, photography, and the many rhododendrons surrounding his home overlooking the Narrows Bridge. Harold is survived by his wife Mary, his four children, Ray Johnston (wife Mary), Susan Johnston (partner John Karlson), Fred Johnston (wife Jayne), and Sally Clancy (husband Charles); his grandchildren Sam Johnston, Mona Johnston, Emily Barto, Heather Barto, Mekenzie Johnston, Graham Johnston, Forrest Johnston, Mike Clancy, Chris Clancy and Matthew Clancy. We will, along with all family and friends, mourn his loss. Harold was a caring father and grand-dad, loving to laugh with and tease his offspring while always keeping an eye on their welfare. In his later years his children and grandchildren delighted in coaxing a chuckle out of Harold at every opportunity. A very special thanks to his in-home caregivers Doreen, Sarah, Bruce, Stacy, Lolly and Karen for their capable care while Harold was home. They became friends and part of the family. Also a thank you to the care and caregivers at University Place Care Center. No services will be held. A donation can be made in Harold's name to a charity of your choice.
