I met Jim in middle school, and we had every class together in 8th grade. I worked my first job with him as a cook at the old Pinnacle Peak in Garden Grove. I will always cherish the memories of the good times we shared. I can't think of him without a smile on his face.

I never had any contact with Jim after high school, but when I heard the news, my heart sank. It made me stop and wonder why. Why had the death of this person (whom I hadn't talked to in 25 yrs) made me sad? And it made me realize: I don't remember what kind of car Jim used to drive, or whether or not he hung out with the "cool kids". I don't know if he lettered in any sports, or what clubs he may have belonged to. What I do know is the way he made me feel. If I was walking down the hallway at school and Jim happened to pass by, he ALWAYS said 'hi' to me, always an acknowledgment. This is what I remember: the way he made me feel about myself, like I was "seen", that I was important enough to acknowledge. I don't know if he would have even remembered me if someone mentioned my name - I'd like to think he would have. And, I'm sure he never thought I would remember him well, but I do. I remember the warm smile he gave to me everytime he saw me. That's what's important. Thank you, Jim, for making a shy teenage girl feel "seen". Kim (Poole) Bruce
