JAMES HALLGREN Obituary

James E. Hallgren Jim "Bapa", 96, of Tacoma, WA passed away peacefully on February 20, 2011. Jim was born to Oscar & Ann Hallgren October 30, 1914 in Fairbanks, Alaska. After the rush for gold his family returned to Tacoma where he spent most of his life (except during the Depression when he lived in Livingston, Montana working the Northern Pacific Railroad). Jim was married to the love of his life, Delphine for 65 years. He had one daughter, JoAnn Hallgren (Larsen) who was his pride and joy! After 30 years of working for the railroad, Jim retired from Streich Bros. in the Port of Tacoma. A master machinist, he once machined a tiny working steam engine the size of a deck of cards. He also made beautiful, lightweight, and strong fishing reels still used by his family today. Jim had a great appreciation for the outdoors. His family enjoyed hearing stories of his adventures along the Yellowstone. Jim enjoyed playing the piano and harmonica, salmon fishing in Puget Sound, and being home watching his great grandchildren run in his backyard. Jim was a philosophical man. His appreciation for and understanding of life helped to shape the lives of those that loved him so much. Survived by (all from Tacoma), his wife, Delphine Hallgren, daughter, JoAnn Larsen (Darell), granddaughter, Kelli Hodges (John), grandson, Ryan Larsen (Debbie), six great grandchildren, and his beloved dog, Sadie. Predeceased by brother, Robert Hallgren (Tacoma), and sister, Lois Carlson (Tacoma). Jim had a very special place in his heart for all animals, especially dogs. Contributions in his memory may be made to the Humane Society for Tacoma and Pierce County 253-284-5802. A gathering for family and friends will be held on March 7, from 12-3pm at the Larsen home.

Del,
Many times you came to work and would say,"well Jim is going bobbin in the bay". I always enjoyed hearing this, because Jim liked to fish and what made Jim happy made you happy.
We are sorry for your loss.
Know that you are in our thoughts and prayers.
