KATHRYN CHAPPUIS Obituary

Kathryn Antonia Chappuis Born in Lincoln, IL on October 8, 1922 Died on March 7, 2011 and resided in DuPont, WA Kay Chappuis was born in Lincoln, Illinois on October 8, 1922 to John and Antonia Jurjevich, and passed away on March 7, 2011 in Tacoma, Washington at the age of 88. Kay graduated from Galesburg High School, Galesburg, Illinois in 1940 and moved to Washington, D.C. to attend Brown Business College. She subsequently worked there as a private secretary and a model for several years. Kay met her future husband, Steve Chappuis, when he was stationed in Washington, D.C. and they were married on June 6, 1946 at Fort Meyer, Virginia. Kay, Steve, and their children lived wherever Steve's career in the Army took them--McLean, Virginia; The Hague, Netherlands; Naples, Italy; Fort Bragg, North Carolina; Fort Lewis, Washington; Fort Monroe, Virginia; and finally back to Lakewood, Washington. During one of Steve's overseas deployments, Kay and children lived in Rayne, Louisiana to be near Steve's extended family. Throughout their postings, Kay was an active participant in the life of the community. At Fort Monroe she chaired volunteers of the American National Red Cross, helped establish the Home Care and Casualties Committees, and worked in the Thrift Shop, with the Officers' Wives' Club activities, and in the Junior Casement Club. While living in Lakewood she volunteered at Madigan Hospital and belonged to the Vera T. Davis Orthopedic Guild, the Interlaaken Garden Club, the Associated Retired Officers Wives, and the Generals Wives Club. Upon retirement, Kay and Steve enjoyed many years of traveling throughout the United States and Europe. A gifted listener and hostess, Kay made friends from all walks of life. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. Her greatest joy came from entertaining friends and family. Many, many people will miss talking to Kay. Kay is survived by daughter Suzanne Winkles and her husband Bill (Ocean Shores, WA); son Steve, his wife Jan, and their daughter Claire (Portland, OR); and many loving friends. She was preceded in death by her husband Brigadier General Steve A. Chappuis, her mother, father, and brother John Jurjevich. The family wishes to express their gratitude to the staff at Patriots Landing in DuPont, Washington, for their kindness, caring, and companionship during Kay's residence there. A private family service will be held at the Mt. Tahoma National Cemetery in Kent, WA. The family wishes that donations be directed to St. John Bosco Church, 10508 112th St. SW, Lakewood, WA 98498. Kay was a beautiful soul, a kind and caring friend, and a great listener. I will miss our morning talks. I am saddened by the loss of a friend, but happy that Kay and Steve can now rest together. The staff at Patriots Landing miss her dearly.
