Mama~
Written by Rachel Joslin
What a fruitful and spirited life you lived
Awakened by the daily Ray of sunshine
Dedicated hands used to enchant your charming garden
Rows of crimson raspberry shrubs and ginger olive squash
Black~eyes Susan, Johnny jump~ups, in addition to Ray flowers
Rosemary, sage, Shangra~La was your thyme
I was a parentless child that year
Timid by the family that was such a mystery
Perhaps even more stubborn than you
Reminisce of garlic oatmeal aroma lingers my senses
Grape and orange soda still sweet on my tongue
Cheeseburgers on Fridays, blt’s at the diner, TBN on again
The gift of a filly, you wanted us to mature together
Up before sunrise to feed Princess, papa still nicknamed me “dropsy”
Heartbroken to leave her, a horse can’t gallop in the city
The soil used to bring your mystical garden to life
Midnight earth, black growth that consumed you
Away you went, too suddenly
Your angelic soul was beckoned today
Just skin and bones, fruitless and spiritless
Your essence still remains, in your garden and within me.

Mr. Mays, it has been a very long time ago that we worked together at Range Control, but I remember the many times that you would share with me about your lovely wife Patricia, and your children. I remember how you would gleam when you spoke of your wife and her love for her children, her garden and her herbs. Since then, I have the pleasure of knowing your sons Tony and Havre and your grandson James. On many occasions after work, James would share with me about his love for his grandparents, and how much he loves and honors you both. I do not have the adequate words to even attempt to fill the vast void in your life from the passing of your lovely wife Patricia, of 58 years. I hope that you will accept my humble attempt at expressing my deepest sympathy for you and also your adult children in the passing of your wife and their mother, Patricia.
