Sally Hayes Obituary

Sally Hill Hayes Sally Hill Hayes, of Lakewood, passed away peacefully on April 10, 2011 in Palm Desert, CA. She was born September 16, 1936 to Hedley and Pauline Hill in Portland OR. Sally attended the Catlin School and Whitman College, and graduated from the University of Oregon. In 1957 she married Philip S. Hayes, also of Portland. Sally was an avid gardener and created beautiful gardens in the various communities the family lived in while Phil was with the Weyerhaeuser Co. They moved to Tacoma in 1967. Sally was a board member of several organizations, including the Washington State Historical Society and the Tacoma Garden Club. She was a president of the BASH auction and the Aloha Club. Sally loved travel, and over the years she and Phil visited many foreign lands. They also enjoyed time on small boats, which they used for trips around Vancouver Island, up and down the East Coast, and through the Great Lakes. She was rarely without a pen and sketch pad on these adventures, and her journals leave a striking example of her sense of humor and the way she saw the world. Sally was an avid knitter, particularly in later life, making hundreds of colorful hats for various Pierce County daycare centers and women's shelters. Sally is survived by her husband Philip, brother David (Mary Jane), of Boise ID, daughter Alice of Seattle and son Charles (Deborah) of Hingham, MA and their children John, Abigail and Alexander. Memorial services will be held Monday May 9th, 2011, 11 am, at The Tacoma Art Museum. The family suggests donations to the Tacoma YWCA Women's Shelter, 405 Broadway, Tacoma WA 98402.
