Marilyn and Family, So sorry to hear of Bill's passing. I lost Al this past June and we often talked of Bill and Yourself. However, with Al being so ill, we never did get to connect again with Bill. Al thought of Bill as a wonderful golfing partner, a working associate and truly a great and wonderful friend. We shall miss them both. Sandy Green, Gig Harbor

Past and Current Oak Grove/Firwood Staff and Students

Bill designed, implemented and directed a program of education for children and adults at Western State Hospital and Child Study Treatment Center that has sustained for over fifty years. During this time, he helped align the state mental health facilities with the education systems into what is now known as the institutional education system. The program recruited teachers and staff who were inspired and trained in the works of some of the most notable experts in the fields of education, psychology and psychiatry that included Skinner, Perls, Ellis, Lindsey and Haring. Bill wrote grants for novel projects and Oak Grove/Firwood schools became the laboratories where staff and special needs students were the beneficiaries. His links with Central and Western State Universities provided continuous on-site classes where teachers received direct experience with patients. Bill's innovative work made this a premier compassionate assignment area for military families requiring special education services for special needs children.
In the 1990's Bill helped secure funding for Oak Grove Elementary and Firwood Secondary schools that continue to serve disabled students at Child Study and Treatment Center and Western State Hospital.
Bill was a sensitive, charismatic leader who by example encouraged his staff to care and innovate with the disabled student through any viable strategy. His credo of "Try it and see how it works" inspired generations of teachers and brought successes for innumerable disabled students throughout the years.

Bill will be missed. We had many conversations in which we discussed and solved most of the current world wide issues. Coffee or lattes were the fuel. On the serious vein he helped me with grant issues and other projects that I was working on.
He was interesting, congenial and a person that I enjoyed being with. I was at Clover Park VTI ( Clover Park Technical College) as well as a couple years with the school district where we had many occasions to collaborate.
I will miss him.

I was Federal Programs Accountant for Clover Park Vocational Institute/Technical College from 1989-1994. My supervisor John Wilson knew Bill Kalenius well, and I had the opportunity to work with him and John on several occasions in the development of grants for the college. I send my condolences to the family.

I was always in awe of Dr. Kalenius when sitting opposite him in meetings of several of my architectural presentations. He became Bill when we developed a personal relationship when he consulted for CPTC college as a very successful grant writer. He was an outstanding thinker and doer and gentleman. My sincere condolences to the family.
