ISABELLE ZASTROW Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 28, 2010.
Isabelle R. Zastrow Isabelle Zastrow was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland September 9, 1925. Growing up, Isabelle and her four brothers and sisters first had to endure the Great Depression. Food and money were scarce during her early years, and even worse during World War II. On an April night during "The Blitz" of 1941 the German air force hit Belfast. At the age of fifteen Isabelle was working at a tobacco factory by day and dancing by night. It was there at a dance hall with her sisters and friends when the city exploded around them. It was too late to hide in an air raid shelter, so they huddled in the middle of the dance hall as the bombs shattered the windows and the lights went out. Isabelle and her sisters ran home past burning buildings to find their family safe. After the war ended, Isabelle and her entire family emigrated from the United Kingdom to the United States. It was in Tacoma where she met her soul mate, our father Joseph Zastrow (at a dance hall, and yes her two sisters were also there). In 1950 they married, and for 50 years, through thick and thin, they were constant companions. Our summers were spent camping at Carpenters Park with family and friends. Isabelle's passion was dancing with her husband every Saturday night. Joseph passed away in December 2000, and Isabelle died peacefully on November 25, 2010. Survivors are her brother, David Maxwell, daughters Shirley (Paul) and Kathleen (Eugene), and sons John Zastrow and Joseph Zastrow (Pamela); they had 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. A celebration of her life will be held at the South Tacoma Eagles Hall at 7037 South Pine, Tacoma on Wednesday, December 1st, 2010 at 4:00pm. Our family would like to thank Dr. Dehlinger for caring for our mom.

Dear Shirley: My heart goes out to you, Paul and your family. So sorry to hear your mother passed away. I know you will miss her greatly. We all have admired you for the love and attention you gave to your mother. You were always a devoted daughter, putting her needs first. She was very fortunate that you traveled great distances several times a year just to be with her and to put her affairs in order.
Every mother would be honored to have a wonderful daughter like you.
Love,
Always your friend, Melody

My Grandma Belle was the greatest women you could know. My memories of her and the time we spent together will always be with me. I will miss her "cake" or better know as Irish Soda bread, but will always be warm in my kitchen for years to come. Grandma Belle and Grandpa Joe spent alot of time in the early years with Jeff and I, for which I am grateful. I will miss my Grandma Belle, but think of her fondly now a peace dancing in heaven with the love of her life. They are finally together again. Love you Gee Gee

Aunt belle,

Your laughter was contagious. Just to hear Hi love on the other end of the phone is one memory will take with me forever. You were my moms big sister and you shared alot of memories with her and all of us. I will miss you but am so at peace with the thought of you, uncle Joe and your brother and sisters together again. Don't forget the wee cup of tea for my dad. We love you. Colleen and Andrew

We will surely miss Grandma Zastrow as she was one of the strongest women we have ever known. She lived an admirable life, one we all are proud of. Thank you for the woman you were, Grandma, and for all the love you showed!

With all our love, Michelle, Matt, Shae & Matthew JR
