ELDEN CRITCHLOW

1939 - 2017

Elden "Gayle" Critchlow April 7, 1939- August 21, 2017 Born in Yakima, WA to Wayne and Gertrude Critchlow. His family owned an apple orchard, so he spent his childhood on a farm in the Tieton area. In 1949, his family moved from Yakima to Bremerton. He and his brothers participated in multiple sports, and graduated from Bremerton High School. In 1957, he joined the Washington National Guard, and began night school to become a journeyman electrician. He was a proud member of the IBEW local 76, and a successful commercial electrician for many decades. He began his career with H and W Wiring, then spent over 25 years with McWick Electric, and retired with Ault Electric. In 1961, he married Linda Tostevin-Wakefield. Their marriage lasted 30 years and produced 3 children. The weekends were all about camping with friends and family, time at Lake Cushman, and BMX racing. For many years he coached boys' soccer and girls' softball, and YMCA Indian Guides. He lived in the house he built in University Place for 50 years and cherished his friendships with longtime neighbors, especially Wes Johnson. He hosted Halloween events at his house for many years and had dinner most nights with his daughter's family. He was always willing to help with home improvement projects, babysitting kids and pets, and attending countless concerts, games, plays, cub scouts whatever the grandkids were doing! He was preceded in death by his parents, oldest brother Arlen, and long-time companion Margie Birch. He is survived by his brother James "Jim", his children: Tami Johnson (Ron), Doug (Helen), and Rob. His five beloved grandchildren, and one great-granddaughter. Gayle was a gentle, kind, generous man, with a quick smile and realistic sense of humor. During his illness, he continually worried about the people around him more than himself. He fought a courageous battle with cancer and passed away peacefully with his daughter Tami and grandson Kyle by his side. He will be greatly missed by friends and family.
