Herschel Frederick Kleffman, 86, of Seymour, passed away Thursday, July 17, 2014, at his residence.
Born Dec. 14, 1927, in Bartholomew County, he was the son of August Frederick and Malinda Hoene Kleffman. He married Doris May Marsh on Sept. 17, 1949, at St. Paul Lutheran Church-Borchers.
Herschel was a 1945 graduate of Cortland High School and was a World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Navy from 1945 until 1954. He was employed by Cummins Engine Company for more than 30 years and retired in 1984. He then managed Jackson County Water Utility for eight years, retiring in 1992.
Mr. Kleffman was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church-Borchers, American Legion Post 89, Jackson County Beef Producers and Star Promenaders Square Dance Club. He enjoyed golf, dart ball, hunting, fishing and traveling for vacations. In his retirement years, he also enjoyed farming.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Doris; daughters, Carmen (Nolan) Herkamp and Tamara (Max) Shelton, all of Seymour; a son, Todd Kleffman, of Indianapolis; three grandchildren, John (Raylene) Herkamp, Paul (Canaan) Herkamp and Meghin Shelton; 11 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Mildred Carter; a brother, Virgil (Maude) Kleffman; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a foster brother, Carl O. Hooker.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Paul Lutheran Church-Borchers with the Rev. Stephen Wood officiating. Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Burkholder Funeral Chapel, Seymour, and from 10 a.m. until time of service Monday at the church.
Burial will take place at St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery-Borchers with military graveside rites provided by American Legion 89, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1925, Disabled American Veterans Post 47 and Vietnam Veterans Post 7, all of Seymour.
Memorials may be given to St. Paul Lutheran Church-Borchers or Our Hospice of South Central Indiana.
