Leonard O. Gardenour (1951 - 2014)


Leonard O. Gardenour, 62, of New Albany, passed away Saturday, April 19, 2014, at Floyd Memorial Hospital.
Born May 3, 1951, in Huntington, he grew up in Wabash. He graduated from Wabash High School in 1969. He graduated from Indiana University in 1973, where he was a member of Phi Eta Sigma and Blue Key honor fraternities and the Marching Hundred Band. He received a master's degree in criminal justice from Michigan State University in 1977. He was a captain in the U.S. Air Force security police, where he served eight years and was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal. He was a graduate of the FBI National Academy. Retiring in 2005 after 30 years service as a criminal justice professional, he established the criminal justice program at Ivy Tech Southern Indiana, serving as program chair from 2007 until 2014. He also served as a criminal justice adjunct instructor at Indiana Wesleyan University and was a member of Graceland Baptist Church in New Albany.
He leaves behind a legacy of hundreds of future criminal justice professionals whose service was guided by what he called his pearls of wisdom.
He was married April 30, 1983, to Rebecca Baker. Their daughter, Abigail, was born from this union and was the light of his life.
He is survived by his loving wife of 31 years, Becky Gardenour; daughter, Abigail Hilyard, and her husband, Matt; parents, Don and Madalyn Gardenour; two sisters, Peggy Taylor and her husband, Byron, and Rosalee Blevins and her husband, Bill; a brother, Kent Gardenour; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Graceland Baptist Church, 3600 Kamer Miller Road, New Albany, with a graveside service to follow at approximately 2 p.m. at Fairview Cemetery in Brownstown.
Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Scott Funeral Home, 2515 Veterans Parkway, Jeffersonville, and from 10 a.m. until time of service Thursday at Graceland Baptist Church.
The family would like to give a special heartfelt thanks to the Ivy Tech Criminal Justice students, staff and alumni.
