Leonard L. Newkirk, 92, Columbus, passed from this life at 7:25 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 15, 2012, at Richard L. Roudebush V.A. Medical Center in Indianapolis.
Born in Cortland on Nov. 3, 1920, Mr. Newkirk was the son of Louis and Catharine Darlage Newkirk. He married Leonia Conrad on June 25, 1965. She preceded him in death Sept. 20, 1979.
Mr. Newkirk was a World War II army veteran. He received the EAME Theatre Ribbon with five Bronze Stars, a Silver Star and the Presidential Unit Citation.
He was a self-employed carpenter and enjoyed fishing, hunting and gardening.
He was a faithful member of St. Peter Lutheran Church, Waymansville, and was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1987 in Columbus.
Survivors include a daughter, Joyce Lynn (Randy) Sims of Columbus; grandchildren, Whitney Hundley of Indianapolis and Malachi and Jacob Sims, both of Columbus; a sister, Marie Newkirk of Seymour; and many nieces and nephews.
Mr. Newkirk was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a sister, Wilma Newkirk; and brothers, Omer, Clarence and John Newkirk.
The funeral will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Waymansville, with the Rev. John L. Beabout officiating.
Family and friends may call from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Jonathan Moore Pike in Columbus and from 9 a.m. until service time Monday at the church.
Burial will be at the church cemetery. Full military rites will be presented by the Bartholomew County Veterans Color Guard.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Peter Lutheran Church, Waymansville.
