Marie Johnson Bridges, 99, passed away at 9:15 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2014, at her home in rural Commiskey.
Funeral services will be at noon Saturday at First Marion Baptist Church, 7730 W. County Road 850S. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until time of service Saturday at the church. Interment will be at Mount Zion Cemetery, Commiskey.
Marie was born July 24, 1915, in Marion Township, the daughter of Martin and Iva Hughes Johnson. On
July 22, 1940, she married Everett Bridges, who died in October 1983. Her parents and six siblings, Walter Johnson, Bessie Johnson, Virgil Johnson, Pearl Johnson Zebell, Hugh Johnson and Marjorie Johnson Jones, also preceded her in death.
She is survived by her son, Rex (Nita) Bridges, Seymour; daughter, Mardena (Paul) Michelson, Davis, California; three grandchildren, Elizabeth Marie (Johnny) Burnette, Breckenridge, Colorado, Paul Riley Bridges, Seymour, and Max Everett Michelson, Santa Cruz, California; and three great-grandchildren, Marie Josephine Burnette, John Deputy Burnette and Mose Day Burnette, all of Breckenridge, Colorado. In addition, she leaves behind her sister-in-law, Mary Margaret Young; her nieces and nephews; and their descendants.
Marie graduated from Mount Zion Grade School in 1928 and Marion Township High School in 1932. After attending Ball State University for two years, she returned to Marion Township to teach at Mount Zion Grade School. In 1940, she received her bachelor's degree from Central Normal College and started teaching at Paris Crossing High School. Subsequently, she taught in Charlestown and in Arcola and Tuscola in Illinois. In 1977, she retired from Tuscola, Illinois, schools and returned to Marion Township.
Marie loved her family, her farm and her churches, Mount Zion Methodist Church in Commiskey, Tuscola (Illinois) United Methodist Church and First Marion Baptist Church, where she had been a member for more than 35 years. She was interested in genealogy and local history and served as a resource for others curious about these topics.
Marie's family would like to thank the members of First Marion Baptist Church and friends and family who supported her in her final years. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Mount Zion Cemetery Fund.
