Joseph E. Kiel, 88, passed away Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013.
Joseph graduated from Indiana University with a bachelor of science degree in accounting. He spent 2½ years in the Army Infantry in World War II, landing in Normandy six days after D-Day. Wounded three times, he received the Purple Heart, two oak leaf clusters and the Bronze Star.
He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church; the Disabled American Veterans and American Legion. Along with time in the accounting field, Joseph served as a field representative with the Indiana Manufacturers Association and finally as the owner of two coin laundries and dry cleaners. Retiring in 1978, he and his wife spent 15 years in Arkansas and 12 years in Florida, returning to Indianapolis in 2005
Born in Seymour, he was the son of Daniel and Lena Kiel, both of whom preceded him in death.
Survivors include his sons, Gregory (Judy) and Sidney (Chris); and grandchildren Douglas, Brian and Clayton.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruthan, and five brothers.
A memorial gathering will take place from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. John's Lutheran Church, 6630 Southeastern Ave., Indianapolis, IN 46203, followed by a memorial service at 11:30 a.m. in the church. An inurnment will take place in the Field of Valor at Crown Hill Cemetery at a later date.
