Stephen L. Springer, 48, Freetown, passed away Tuesday, April 22, 2014.

Stephen was baptized at United Methodist Church in Greenwood and was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Brownstown. He retired from the U.S. Army after 23 years of service. He was employed with Tri-Star Engineering, Bedford, and contracted to Crane Navel Surface Warface Center. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Greenwood and was a member of the American Legion. He belonged to the Indiana Blue Chips and was an Indiana High School Athletic Association official certified in all sports. He was a former varsity softball coach at Scottsburg High School.
Born Nov. 4, 1965, in Indianapolis, he was the son of Evan and Nicole Williams Springer. On Oct. 11, 2003, in Brownstown, he married Janet Hall, who survives.
Other survivors include one son, Sterling Springer, Brownstown; one daughter, Shelby Springer, Campbellsburg; three stepsons, Jerry (Tabatha) Fisher, Michigan, Christopher Hinton, Brownstown, and Nicholas Hinton, Richmond; one brother, Shawn (Jennifer) Springer, Lafayette; and two sisters, Stacy David Griffin, Martinsville, and Shannon (Bill) Glidden, Whiteland.
Friends may call 4 to 8 p.m. today at Spurgeon Funeral Home Inc., Brownstown, with a memorial service to be conducted at 7 p.m., with Pastor Jeff Patterson officiating.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at United Methodist Church in Greenwood. Friends may call from 11 a.m. until the time of the service Saturday at the church. Internment will be at Greenwood Cemetery. Arrangements in Greenwood are being handled by Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Service.
Memorials may be given to the Wounded Warriors Project.
