Basil Wolfe Obituary

Basil N. Wolfe Sr. MARYVILLE, Tenn. Basil N Wolfe Sr, age 93, formerly of Mountain City, Tenn., passed away on Thursday, Dec. 2, 2010, at Blount Memorial Hospital in Maryville. He was born on March 10, 1917, to the late John Newton Wolfe and Nancy Gollohan Wolfe. In addition to his parents, Basil was preceded in death by his wife, Julia Ramey Wolfe; and two brothers, W. Harold and Gerald S. Wolfe. Basil was a United States Army veteran of WWII. He served under General Patton and was part of the 100 mile march to relieve Bastogne at the Battle of the Bulge. He was wounded in combat, received the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Combat Infantry Badge and several other awards and commendations. A member of First Baptist Church of Mountain City, Basil served as a Trustee, Deacon and Chairman of the reserve fund and maintenance committees for many years. He was a businessman with Western Auto and furniture stores in Mountain City and Damascus, Va., from 1947 until his retirement in 1980. He was a member of the Civitan Club, Modern Woodman of the Year, and lifelong member of the American Legion. For 10 years he served on the Board of Directors of Cannon Memorial Hospital, Banner Elk, N.C. Basil is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Basil N. Wolfe Jr and Kay of Mentor, Ohio; daughter and son-in-law, Nancy Jennings and Jan of Maryville; grandson, Michael N. Wolfe and wife Kathy of Granville, Ohio; granddaughter, Victoria Wolfe Bender and husband Gary of Charlotte, N.C.; great-grandchildren, Bryan and Jacob Wolfe, and David and Matthew Bender; and several nieces and nephews. A celebration of life will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 5, 2010, at First Baptist Church of Mountain City with the Rev. Ricky Campbell officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:30 2:30 prior to the service. The graveside service and interment will follow at the Sunset Memorial Park, and military rites will be accorded by the Johnson County Honor Guard and the Tennessee National Honor Guard. Pallbearers are Michael Wolfe, Bryan Wolfe, Jacob Wolfe, Roger Wolfe, Robert Wolfe, David Wolfe, Jan Jennings, and Gary Bender. Honorary pallbearers are Boyd Wilson and active and inactive members of the Board of Deacons at First Baptist Church. The family expresses deep gratitude to the staff of Williamsburg Villas, Extended Family Services and especially caregiver Viola Stewart. In lieu of flowers, the family hopes that you will continue the legacy of Basil Wolfe by quietly opening your heart and resources to someone in need.
