Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 7, 2011.
Betty Jane Graham Maiden BRISTOL, Va. Betty Jane Graham Maiden went to the Lord on Jan. 5, 2011, after a courageous battle with several health issues. Betty was born June 13, 1933, in Bristol Virginia, to the late Glayden and Alpha Campbell Graham of Bristol Virginia. Two sisters, Elva Pruitt of Bristol Virginia, and Virginia Lambert of Glen Burnie, Md., preceded her in death. Betty and Doug were married May 11, 1951. When Doug returned from Army service in 1954, they moved to Newport News, Va., to work at Newport News Dry Dock and Shipbuilding Company where she was employed as an engineering secretary. Betty and Doug moved back to Bristol in 1966 and she became a homemaker and bookkeeper for the family business for several years. In 1982, she was employed by Hill's Department Store as a cashier, moving up to office manager. She retired from Ames's Department Store as a store trainer with 20 years of service. Betty was a member of McIver Presbyterian Church of Bristol Virginia and volunteered for Faith in Action. Betty is survived by her husband of 59 years, Douglas Maiden of the home; one brother, Wendell Graham and wife Betty of Newport News; two sons, Scott Maiden and wife Karen of Tucson, Ariz., and Phillip Maiden and wife Joyce of Bristol; six grandchildren, Andrew Maiden and Matthew Maiden of Tucson, Heather Maiden of Kingsport, Kenny Castle, Kelly Castle and Kala Pierce of Bristol; five great-grandchildren; 25 nieces and nephews; and a host of special and dear friends. The family thanks Dr. Frederick Martin and the staff at Internal Medicine and Pediatric Associates, the three East and Three West nursing staff at Bristol Regional Medical Center, the staff of Advanced Home Care nursing, and the staff of the Wellmont Hospice House for their exemplary care during Betty's illness. Mom was a wonderful mother and will truly be missed by all. A memorial service will be conducted Saturday, Jan. 8, 2011, at 4 p.m. in the Weaver Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Alan Chapman officiating. The family will receive friends from 2-3:45 p.m. prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Wellmont Hospice House, 280 Steele's Road, Bristol, TN 37620. Scott, Karen..I am so sorry for your loss! Betty was one of a kind and I will always treasure her memory! The best one I have is at the ball field when our kids were small and she fussed at me for having my infant there to cheer our team on! She was a HOOT! She was definately a warm caring person and I am thankful for all the moments I was given to share in her life! She will be missed!
