RAVEN, Va. – Dolphis "Catfish" Wongee McGlothlin, age 73, passed away Thursday, Nov. 13, 2008, in a Richlands, Va., hospital following a lengthy illness.
He was born in Tazewell County and was the son of the late James Frederick and Dolly Lucinda Wade McGlothlin. He had made his home in the Raven area all of his life and was a retired miner from Island Creek Coal Corp. He was a member of UMWA Local in Oakwood, Va.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ada Virginia Powers McGlothlin.
Survivors are four daughters, Effie Absher and husband Coy of Raven, Donna Gayle Gilbert of Wise, Va., Diana Lynn Boyd and husband Jim of Sevierville, Tenn., and Debbie Stentiford and husband Robert of Ocala, Fla.; two sisters, Myrtle Ball of Raven and Shirley Mallory and husband Bill of Carrollton, Ga.; one brother, Clarence McGlothlin and wife Geraldine of Raven; special caregivers, Gladys Shelton and Peck Armes; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services for Dolphis Wongee McGlothlin will be conducted Sunday, Nov. 15, 2008, at 2 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands, with the Rev. Buddy Herald and the Rev. Dannie Short officiating. Interment will follow at the Ball Family Cemetery on Road Ridge near Raven.
Grandchildren will serve as pallbearers.
Friends may call after 6 p.m. on Saturday at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands.
