Sometimes a small thing can lead to a big change in your life. A phone call from my cousin Deb saying “Momma’s in the hospital” was one of those for me. It led to a reconnection to my Aunt Doris and her wonderful family. Known as Doris to some, Mamaw to many, she’ll always be Cracker Jack to me.
Over the past 6 months, our visits would begin with me saying “Hey Lady, what’s going on in here”? She would always reply, “Hey youngun”, and the stories would begin. She would usually start by telling me the mischief she had been in since the last time I was there. And believe me, there was always mischief, which led to the nickname. She would then tell me stories about my family, most of which I had never heard. Some funny. Some sad. But stories I’ll treasure forever. Each time I left, I would say “Try to stay out of trouble”. Her reply…. “I’ll try. But it’s hard!”
Her strength through adversity was great. Her love for family strong and unconditional. She will be missed by many.
