ABINGDON, Va. – Ernest "Gib" Hagy, age 81, a resident of Washington County, passed away on Friday, May 15, 2009.
He was a lifelong resident of Washington County, Va., and was the son of the late Alonzo M. Hagy and Nannie M. Statzer Hagy. He was a retired mechanic and farmer and served in the U.S. Army. He was an active member of the Painter Creek Church of Christ. He loved to deer hunt and enjoyed being in the outdoors, and he became a true friend to anyone that met him.
He was preceded in death by four sisters, Nellie Hagy Widener Pierce, Mrytle Roark, Virginia Kingsley and Lilly Widener; and four brothers, Philden Hagy, Perry Hagy, Ed Hagy and Robert Hagy.
He is survived by his loving wife, Ruth Hagy of the home; one son, Jerry Lynn Hagy of Bristol Virginia; two granddaughters, Misty Hagy Goodwin and husband Jeff of Knoxville, Tenn., and Nickie Hagy Cosgrove and husband Derick of Kingsport, Tenn.; one great-grandchild, Samuel Sidney Goodwin; and one sister, Hazel Minton of Abingdon, Va.
Funeral services for Ernest "Gib" Hagy will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, May 19, 2009, in the Frost Funeral Home Chapel, with Minister Mark Gaminde officiating. Burial will follow in the Knollkreg Memorial Park.
Active pallbearers will be Andrew Dollinger, Gilmer Harless, Paul Russell, Ken Smith, Bob Nichols and Eddie Prater. Honorary pallbearers will be Roger Barker, John Bays and Sam Musser.
The family will receive friends at the Frost Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the Painter Creek Church of Christ, 24579 Green Spring Road, Abingdon, VA 24211, in memory of Gib Hagy. Online condolences can be submitted to the family at www.frostfuneralhome.com.
