Gladys J. McMurray HILTONS, Va. Gladys J. McMurray, 92, of 8836 Bristol Hwy, passed away peacefully Friday morning at her home with her family by her side. Gladys was the last living child of Marion and Bertha McMurray. Gladys grew up in the Gouldman Branch Community of Scott County, Va. She worked at Tennessee Eastman during World War II. In the 1950's she was a voter registrar for the Fulkerson District of Scott County. Eventually she and her husband Virgil were owner/operators of McMurray Grocery in Hiltons for 35 years. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil McMurray; seven brothers and sisters, Hesba, Daisy, Delphia, Georgia, Howard, Kermit and Edgar. Gladys is survived by her children, Mavis Hatton of the home, Patsy Larkey and husband, Jerry of Bristol Virginia, Frank McMurray and wife, Shelia of Abingdon, Va., and Joann Vicars and husband, Freddie of Bristol Virginia; her grandchildren, Jason McMurray, Diane Musick and husband, Kelly, Teresa Tabor, Mike Vicars and wife, Amy, Lori Sauls and husband, Travis, and Lynn Ritchie; her great-grandchildren, Seth and Caleb Tabor, Laken Vicars, Walker and Katelyn Sauls, Kayla and Amanda Linkous and Joseph Ritchie; sisters in law, Ruby McMurray, Louise McMurray and Vivian McMurray; brother in law, Cornelius McMurray; along with several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday Dec. 5, 2010, at Scott County Funeral Home. A service will follow at 7 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Ronnie Horne and the Rev. John Bowlin officiating. Music will be provided by the Bowlin family. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 6, 2010, at Holston View Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Michael Vicars, Travis Sauls, Jason McMurray, Kelly Musick, Chris Carter, Scott Carter and Marvin Gardner. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Jonathan Dixon, Jim Mazrolle, Walker Sauls, Seth Tabor, Caleb Tabor, Joseph Ritchie, Buddy Castle, Frank Castle, Kyle Castle, Woodrow McMurray, and Rex McMurray. Family and friends who wish to attend are asked to meet at the funeral home at 10 a.m. to go in procession. A special thanks goes out to Amedysis Home Health, Advanced Home Care, and Wellmont Hospice. A heartfelt gratitude goes out to Jim Mazrolle for his gift of roses from his garden thru out her illness.
