Gladys Whitaker Newman RICHLANDS, Va. Mrs. Gladys Whitaker Newman, age 94, passed away Monday, Sept. 27, 2010, in a Richlands, hospital following a brief illness. She was born in Jewell Ridge, Va., and was the daughter of the late James Allen and Bertha Collins Smith. She was a lifelong resident of the area and was a retired school teacher from the Tazewell County School System. She was a member of the Richlands Presbyterian Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Crit Whitaker; her second husband, Curtis Martin; her third husband, Jimmy Newman; one sister, Elsie Brown; and four brothers, Bill, Dempsey, Bob, and Jim Smith. Survivors are: one daughter, Wilma Barton and husband, Delmar of Abingdon, Va.; one son, Curtis Whitaker and wife, Lena of Richlands; one sister, Margaret Hess of Jewell Ridge, Va.; three grandchildren, Scott Hooker, Richard Hooker, and Michael Whitaker; two step-grandchildren, Pamela McCracken and Rhonda Pringle; three great-grandchildren, J.C. Whitaker, Kendra Hooker, and Samantha Whitaker; four step-great-grandchildren, Star McCracken, Tyler McCracken, Josh Camper, and Tasha Camper; four great-great-grandchildren, Michael C. Whitaker, Haley Brewster, Isaac Brown, and Tyler Brown. Funeral services for Gladys Newman will be conducted Wednesday, Sept. 29, 2010, at 11 a.m. at the Richlands Presbyterian Church in Richlands with the Rev. Dennis Hoffman and Rev. Jerry Casey officiating. Interment will follow at Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill, Va. Pallbearers will be: Scott Hooker, Richard Hooker, Michael Whitaker, Earl Griffith, John Otis Altizer, and J.C. Whitaker. Friends may call after 6 p.m. Tuesday evening at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands and at the church one hour prior to the funeral on Wednesday. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Richlands Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 446, Richlands, VA 24641.
