John Winred Chambers Grundy, Va. John Winred Chambers, 89 years of age, of the Home Creek Section, passed away Sunday, Nov. 22, 2009, at his home following an extended illness. Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late John and Gusta Chambers Chambers. He was a life-long resident of Buchanan County and a graduate of Grundy High School Class of 1938. He served in the United States Eighth Army during World War II receiving the European-African -Middle-Eastern Service Medal with one Bronze Battle Star and was an expert carbine marksman pistol sharp-shooter Ml attaining the rank of mess sergeant. He was a recipient of the Good Conduct Medal. Mr. Chambers was a member of the Buchanan First Presbyterian Church for 59 years where he served as an elder being ordained Dec. 31, 1978. He was a former employee of Grundy Piggly Wiggly where he served as manager of the produce and frozen food department and enjoyed gardening. Mr. Chambers was preceded in death by his wife, Mollie June Owens Chambers, July 3, 1997. Survived by one daughter, Becky and husband Tony Farmer, Route 1, Grundy; one son, Tom and wife Ellen Chambers, Bristol Virginia; one daughter-in-law, Carol Chambers, Grundy; four grandchildren, Aloysius Farmer, Bart Chambers, Boni Deel, Jeremy Hurley; six great-grandchildren, Brandon Deel, Tate Chambers, Alec Chambers, Reed Chambers, Jenna Hurley, Jaren Hurley. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Jennifer Jo Chambers; one sister, Myrtle Steele; and two brothers, Ernest "Wag" Chambers and Stewart Chambers. Funeral services for John Winfred Chambers will be conducted Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2009, at 11 a.m. at the Buchanan First Presbyterian Church, Grundy, with Rev. Jeff Porter and Rev. Larry David Ratliff II officiating, with burial to follow in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock, Va. Friends may call at the Buchanan First Presbyterian Church Tuesday afternoon at 3 p.m. Visitation will be from 3 till 8 p.m. Active pallbearers will be family and friends. Full military rites will be conducted at the cemetery by members of the Childs Gentry Post 7360 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. The family suggests that expressions of sympathy to be made in the form of donations to Buchanan First Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund; or the Fellowship Baptist Church Building Fund.
