John Niemann Obituary

John "Jack" Paul Niemann John "Jack" Paul Niemann, age 72, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 25, after a long battle with cancer. Funeral services will be held at Farris Funeral Home on Saturday, Nov. 28, at 2 p.m.. Services will be conducted by Rev. Tim Bird, Pastor of Glade Spring Presbyterian Church, assisted by Bob Craig of Abingdon Kiwanis Club, Nancy Leasure of the Washington County Historical Society, and music by Lucy Alexander. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until the time of the service. Jack is survived by his wife Rubinette; and two children: son, John of Richmond, Va., and daughter, Beth and her husband Kevin Starkey; and two grandchildren, William John and John Paul Starkey of Colorado. Jack was born in Chicago, the son of the late Herbert and Evelyn Hedges Niemann. He graduated from Kenyon College, Gambria, Ohio, and Columbia University with an MBA in business. Jack served in the U.S. Air Force, after the end of the Korean conflict, where he directed supply operations out of Osan. He was also active with the local Korean children's orphanage in Osan. After returning from service, Jack worked as comptroller for Corning Glass Works and retired from Sara Lee/Electrolux Corporation in Bristol Virginia in 1995.. Jack was active with Washington County Historical Society, Abingdon Kiwanis Club and was president of the Virginia Highland's Festival in 1995. Memorial contributions may be made, in lieu of flowers, to the Washington County Historical Society; Old Glade Presbyterian Church; or other charities of choice. Burial services will be held next week at Mount Carmel Methodist Church in Forest, Va.
