SALISBURY, N.C. – Mr. John "J.D." Stumpp, age 69, formerly of Shortt Gap, Va., passed away Friday, April 10, 2009, in a Salisbury hospital following an extended illness.
Born at Richlands, Va., he was the son of the late James I. and Maye Damron Stumpp. He was a 1957 graduate of Richlands High School and a U.S. Army veteran. He was a longtime coal truck driver and retired from Apac in Charlotte, N.C., in 2005, with 10 years of service. He was a member of the Richlands Masonic Lodge No. 318 AF&AM and the Kazim Shrine Temple at Roanoke, Va. He attended the Raven Assembly of God.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, James Kenneth Stumpp.
He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Ruth Wade Stumpp; one son, Chris Stumpp of Carrollton, Va.; one grandson, Matthew Stumpp of Carrollton; one sister, Vicki Nuckels and husband Bill of Richlands, Va.; two brothers, Cecil Stumpp and wife Ethel and Mike Stumpp, all of Richlands; one nephew, Adam Stumpp; and several other nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services for Mr. John "J.D." Stumpp will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 14, 2009, in the Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff, Va., with the Rev. Barry Absher officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenhills Memory Gardens Cemetery at Claypool Hill, Va.
Pallbearers will be Buzz Bohon, Joe Bohon, Paul Bohon, Jonathan Lowe, Danny Damron, Gary Damron and Bill Nuckels. Honorary pallbearers will be George Dunford, Larry Engardio, John E. Brown Jr., Landon Altizer, Roy Horton, Troy Horton, Ernie Walk and Ronnie Smith.
The family will receive friends at the Singleton Funeral Service in Cedar Bluff from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday. Masonic Rites will be conducted at 6:30 p.m. by the Richlands Masonic Lodge.
