Kenneth R. Hurd BAPTIST VALLEY, Va. Kenneth R. Hurd, age 66, left his earthly home to be with his Heavenly Father on Sunday, Nov. 21, 2010, in the early morning hours, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born Jan. 6, 1944, in Russell County, Va., he was a son of the late Ira and Mae Lois Hurd. He attended and was a member of Yost Chapel Freewill Baptist Church in Baptist Valley. He was a retired coal miner having worked for Pittston Coal Seaboard No. 2 Mines. Kenneth loved to spend time with his boys and he loved gardening. He was a loving husband, dad, Boppie and a good friend. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Alice Hurd; two brothers, William "Bingo" Hurd and Ira Hurd Jr.; and mother-in-law, Grace B. Colley. Those left to cherish him include his loving wife of 39 years, Betty Colley Hurd; two sons, Marty Hurd and wife, Valerie of North Tazewell, Va., and Kevin Hurd and wife, Kim of Abingdon, Va.; two grandboys, who were the joy of his life, Kaleb and Cody Hurd of North Tazewell; two sisters, Margaret Campbell of Honaker, Va., and Glenna Edwards of Bristol Virginia; four brothers, Robert Hurd of Bristol Virginia, Paul Hurd and wife, Nadrene of Lebanon, Va., John Lee Hurd and wife, Linda of North Carolina, and Russell Hurd and wife, Linda of Claypool Hill, Va.; his best friend, Arnold "Bo" Rasnake; his faithful canine companion, Chief; and a host of family and friends. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2010, at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell, Va., with Pastor Chuck Patterson and Brother Tommy Colley officiating. Burial will follow at Clinch Valley Memorial Gardens in Richlands, Va. Pallbearers will be Marty Hurd, Kevin Hurd, Jim Campbell Jr., Troy Rasnake, Randy Colley, and Jody Fuller. Honorary pallbearers are Bo Rasnake, Dave Brown, Rhudy Keith, Larry Peery, and Woody Barnett. The family will receive friends at the funeral home after 12 noon of Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2010.
