Lewis Carter Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 14, 2010.
Lewis C. Carter GRAHAM. N.C. Lewis Claude "Uncle Louie" Carter, 71, of 5101 Yale Court, left this world to be with God on Sept. 10, 2010, at VA Hospital in Durham. Uncle Louie was a devoted husband, sincere friend, and dedicated family member. He leaves behind his loving wife, Ruth Spencer Carter, after 47 years of marriage. Lewis was born in Russell County, Va., and was the son of Homer and Ruby Carter, both deceased. In addition to his parents, Lewis was preceded in death by his sister, Nadine Turner; and brothers, Earl Carter, Gene Carter, and Jim Carter. Those who knew Uncle Louie remember his love of life and children of all ages. He served his country in the Army from 1963-1965 and was stationed in Korea during his service. He served as manager of the Burlington Moose Lodge and retired from the Department of Transportation of North Carolina in 2005. Lewis was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Virginia No. 343, and the St. Paul Lodge, in St. Paul, Va. He was a member of Union Baptist Church in Dante, Va. In addition to his wife, Lewis is survived by one sister, Ila Powers of Lockport, Ill.; one brother, Harold J. Carter and wife Dolly, of Cleveland, Va.; a sister-in-law, Vivian Carter of Castlewood, Va. While Lewis and Ruth did not have children, they were blessed with 12 nieces and nephews; and many great- nieces and great-nephews. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 13, 2010, at Salem United Methodist Church. Pastor Cathy Hoyle will be officiating. The family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m. prior to the service in the fellowship hall of the church and at other times will be at the residence. Lewis fought a great fight over the past several years and always remained very positive. Ruth would like to thank all friends, neighbors, and Salem United Methodist Church for their constant care and support of our family. Memorials may be made to Salem United Methodist Church, 3924 Salem Church Road, Haw River, NC 27258. Rich and Thompson Funeral Home and Crematory in Graham are in charge of the arrangements.
