Marjorie Purcell Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 11, 2010.
Marjorie Lytz Purcell ORMOND BEACH, Fla. Marjorie Lytz Purcell, 82, passed away Monday, June 7, 2010. She was born July 4, 1927, in Bristol Virginia, to Martin and Novella Lytz, and was the widow of John E. Purcell. Marjorie began her working career as secretary plus for Richards and Richards, CPA, in Bristol Tennessee, a three-man firm who taught her to do many accounting jobs. When she married John, they moved to Ormond Beach and she applied for temporary work with May Zima CPA. They realized she had accounting experience. She worked for the firm for over 25 years under many names but with the same bosses. She specialized in estate and trust taxation and individual tax returns. After retirement, she continued to work for another five years during tax season. She and John were lucky in that their work allowed extra time off so that they could take long vacations every other year and still have days off to visit with their parents four times a year. They loved to travel and took many cross-country trips to places in the West, taking slide pictures to share with family and friends the wonders of that area. She became a Pilot Club member in March 1970 and was president of the Daytona Beach Club in 1979-1980 when it was the largest club in the world. When the Pilot Club of Halifax Area was organized, she switched to the luncheon club. She also joined the Ormond Beach Woman's Club, Tomoka Bridge Club, Orpenda, Wagon Wheel, a watercolor painting group and other craft groups and enjoyed playing Bridge and the friendship. She also joined a genealogy group and wondered how she ever found time to work. She traced both the Lytz and Purcell families and gave copies of her finding to various libraries and descendants so the work wouldn't be lost in the computer at her death. During her lifetime, she was a Christian and member of the Euclid Avenue Baptist Church in Bristol Virginia, and First Baptist Church Daytona Beach, Fla. Left to cherish her memory are nieces and nephews: nephew, Glen Edward Lytz; great-niece, Kathy L. Goodman; nieces, Vivian W. Williams, Patty Coin and their families; neighbors, Dennis and Sandy Gaertner, who looked after her care for many years. The funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 12, 2010, at the graveside in Glenwood Cemetery with the Rev. Scott Jewel officiating. Her family received friends Wednesday, June 9, from 5-7 p.m. at Haigh-Black Funeral Home; 167 Vining Court, Ormond Beach, FL (386) 677-0451. Marj and John made several memorable trips to Calif to visit us. She was special to the Purcell Legacy Reunion and I attended the reunions as a result of their tireless efforts to make it a success. I will miss her.
