Ruby Deel

RUSSELL PRATER, Va. – Ruby Owens Deel, 92 years of age, went to be with the Lord on Friday, July 17, 2009. Born in Dickenson County on Oct. 5, 1916, she was the daughter of the late Robbie Owens and Fannie Edwards Owens. Ruby was a member of the Sandlick Primitive Baptist Church, member of the Buchanan County Senior Citizens and active in the Golden Olympics, where she had won several medals. She was a former member of the Sandy Valley Seniors Citizens Bowling League, enjoyed cooking for her family and friends and loved to work in her garden. Most of all she was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband of 36 years, Hibbert Deel; son, Roger Hibbert Deel; three brothers, Josh, Leon and Granville Owens; and one sister, Gaynell Owens Duty. She is survived by one daughter, Carol Ann Ramey and husband Dennis of Grundy, Va.; two sons, Jerry Clayton Deel and wife Arlene and Danny Fearl Deel, all of Haysi, Va.; daughter-in-law, Martha Gay Deel of Vansant, Va.; nine grandchildren, Pam Sutherland of Haysi, Robby Deel of Haysi, Michele Sykes of Birchleaf, Va., Danielle Baldwin of Abingdon, Va., Jason Deel, Brittany Deel and Brian Deel, all of Vansant, Joe Gary Ramey of Bluefield, Va., and Devan Alan Ramey of Vansant; and eight great-grandchildren, Kimberley Sue Arlene Deel, Cade Sykes, Camyden Sykes, Caylee Sykes, Carlee Sykes, Kaycee Baldwin, Christopher Luke Baldwin and Chase Allan Ramey. Funeral services for Ruby Owens Deel will be conducted Tuesday, July 21, 2009, at 11 a.m. at the Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home Chapel, with Elder Garnell Gilbert, Elder Roger Fuller, Elder Noah Edwards, the Rev. John Whitner and evangelist Mike Rife officiating. Burial will follow in the A.J. Edwards Cemetery, Birchleaf, Va. Sons and grandsons will serve as active pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be staff of Total Home Care Hospice and Sandra Bowman. The family will receive friends at the funeral home after 6 p.m. Sunday.
