Ruth Nichols Smith Ruth Nichols Smith, age 81, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 9, 2009, at the Hospice House in Bristol following an extended illness. A native of Sullivan County she was a daughter of the late Fred and Margaret Stout Nichols. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde Smith; two brothers, James Nichols and Robert F. Nichols; one sister, Lucille Carrier; and two brothers-in-law, Herbert Smith and Lee Roy Smith. Survivors include one son, Jerry Clyde Smith and wife Carol of Bluff City; one granddaughter, Tara Spencer and husband Erick of Butler; one grandson, Chad Smith of Bluff City; one sister, Lena Dotson of NHC Nursing Home, Bristol; two sisters-in-law, Pearl Nichols and Inez Scoggins and husband Richard; two brothers-in-law, Jack Smith and wife Norma and Jerry Simerly; and a special friend, Scritch Whitaker. The graveside service and interment will be conducted at 11 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 12, 2009, at Sunrise Cemetery with the Rev. Jamie Ferguson, the Rev. Scott Green and the Rev. Elbert Nichols officiating. Honorary pallbearer will be Charles Whitaker. Ministers, family and friends are asked to meet at the cemetery at 10:50 a.m. Saturday. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Chinquapin Grove Baptist Church Building Fund, 1727 Chinquapin Grove Road, Bluff City, TN 37618.
