Ruth Thompson BRISTOL Ruth Thompson, 93, passed away Sunday, Oct. 17, 2010, at NHC of Johnson City. She was born in Lenoir City, Tenn, to the late Rev. Richard E. and Ethel Ramsay Corum. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Eugene Cassidy "Gene Pappy" Thompson; a brother, Richard E. Corum; a son, Dick Peltier Thompson and wife, Sandra Easley Thompson; and two sons-in-law, Otis Lee Hurt and James Rodger Barrett. She graduated from Clinton, Tenn., High School and received her degree as a registered nurse from Baptist Memorial Hospital of Nursing in Memphis. She was a registered nurse at Kingsport Hospital and the Veterans Administration in Johnson City before coming to Bristol, where she later was employed at Bristol Memorial Hospital. She served as school nurse in the Bristol, Virginia School System until her retirement and also served as a nurse at Waldo Miles Camp for Children during the summer months. She held memberships in the State Board of Nursing in both Virginia and Tennessee. She was a life member of the Virginia Congress and Teachers upon her retirement. She was a member of First Baptist Church and the Friendship Bible Class and had served in the church nursery. Survivors include six daughters, Jeanne Laverne Thompson Hurt of Bristol Virginia, Linda Ruth Thompson of Bristol Tennessee, Brenda Gail Thompson Barrett of Nokesville, Va., Susan Leigh Thompson Schniper and husband, Jack of Mountain Brook, Ala., Julia Elizabeth Thompson Bruce and husband, Dan of Bristol Tennessee, and Mary Kay Thompson Fleenor and husband, Brock of Bristol Tennessee; one son, Gary Gene Thompson and wife, Donna Allen Thompson of Monroe, Wash.; one sister, Carolyn Grim of Hollywood, Calif.; 22 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. `Special thanks to NHC of Johnson City and Caris Healthcare. `The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, 2010, in Akard Funeral Home Chapel with Chaplin Harold McNabb officiating. Burial will follow in Glenwood Cemetery. Pallbearers will be her grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will be grandsons and granddaughters. I was very sorry to hear about Ms.Thompson, she and Mr. Thompson were our neighbors on Georgia Ave for several years and they were such sweet people, we always thought highly of each of them. May God comfort each member of the family in the days ahead, I know you are going to miss her.
