Mr. Tate and family,
I was Matthew's mentor teacher during his 3 months of student teaching in 2002. This was fifth grade at Indian Springs Elementary School. We worked well together and became good friends. We discussed many things besides education, and we shared our love of the Lord. Your son was a kind, gentle, intelligent young man who had a great gift for inspiring children. I will always treasure my memories of him. God bless you.

Mr. Tate was my fifth grade teaher in 2008-2009. He was a great teacher. He was well organized and always knew how to make us laugh. My heart broke when I heard about his death. My heart goes out to all of his family. I am praying for you. I will always picture him sitting at his desk or teaching a social studies lesson. I loved him and will always remember him as my favorite fifth grade teacher.
God Bless

Joe and Family,
Words can not express my sorrow for you and your family. I remember Matthew fondly as a young lad when you brought him skating in Coeburn. Take on day at at time and know that your strength will come from a merciful and loving God,only He can provide the comfort and strength you will need to prepare for the days ahead. God bless and keep you all.

Mr. Tate and family,
Although I did not know your son or your family, your son taught my great-niece. She and her mother remember him as an excellent teacher and a fine person. Other family members went to church with your son and your ex-wife. Those in the community who knew them have very fond memories of them. May God comfort you all at this time in the way that only He can.
