JAMES SCHIRADO Obituary

JAMES A. SCHIRADO James A. Schirado. (Jim) died peacefully Tuesday, December 29th in Springfield Oregon with family by his side. Jim was born in Richland's Kadlec Hospital on December 18, 1951, to Eva A. (Duppong) and Victor M. Schirado. He attended Christ the King elementary, Chief Joseph Junior High and Columbia High School. He graduated in 1970 and then attended Central Washington University and Evergreen College. After attending college Jim began his restaurant career at the family owned The Bread Box Bakery and Sandwich Shop in Richland and was a partner with Chuck Freeman at Chez Chaz (later Olympic Blue) in Kennewick. The death of his partner Chuck Freeman and Jim's declining health forced early retirement and eventually long term care for dementia. Jim's long term illness caused personality changes that were at times difficult for family and friends to deal with. Jim was a gifted artist, ceramicist, photographer, silversmith and cook. He loved all animals, especially his own many dogs, pot belly pig, goat, African Gray parrot and other varied pets. In his last year, even with his disabilities, he volunteered at the local animal shelter in Newberg, Oregon, which brought him great joy. A few days before Jim's death, a 64th birthday celebration was held for him which was shared by many who had come to know and care for him. He enjoyed all the party food and music. Jim will be remembered as a loving, tender, funny and very generous son, brother and friend. Those of us who knew him in his younger years will remember him as our loyal and multi-talented "Jimmy". Jim was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his brother Gery (Patti), Yvonne Sherman, Victoria Ann Sirl (Mike), Sara Ellman (Scott) nieces, nephews, many aunts, uncles and cousins. He will be greatly missed. There will be no public memorial but our family would be honored by your donation, in memory of Jim to: Newberg Animal Shelter 902 Brutscher Street Ste. D PMB 107 Newberg, Oregon 97132 Attn: Jan Floren, President newberganimals.com

Jim was a friend of our family when I was a kid in the 70's. I remember thinking he was one very cool guy! I still have a beautiful set of bowls he made for my mom. You'll always be in my memories Jim.

Jim was a friend and a member of our family during the year he lived with us in Portland while attending art school - and beyond. He was tremendously talented and had a great sense of humor. Jim had a big heart and things he still wanted to do in life. I know he's entertaining the spirits with his always funny quips and that joyous spirit will be with me always. RIP, Sweet Baby James.

I had the great joy and privilege of caring for my brother, Jim, the last several years of his life in Oregon and was at his side when he died. Our family struggled as many families do when brain disease such as dementia slowly takes our loved one. Never once did Jim complain about his lot in life or his physical and mental disabilities. I believe he was braver than I would be had this cruel disease inhabited my body. What remained with Jim until his last breath was his tender and generous soul. It fought for its survival as dementia took his life and it won. Jim, you taught me so much. You will be with me forever.
