Marvin Donald Sager, of Richland, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 7, 2011, at Tri-City Chaplaincy Hospice House with his dear wife, Sandy Sager, by his side.
Marv was born January 26, 1933, in Bradley, Wayland Township, Michigan. His parents were Milton Sager and Gertrude Hazen Sager. He was the seventh of eight children born to Milton and Gertrude.
In 1952, Marv enlisted in the Air Force and served honorably for 8 years including time in Korea during the Korean War. He was trained in the military as an airplane mechanic. Among other decorations, Marv received the Bronze Star medal during his tour of duty.
He married Sondra (Sandy) Arnold on October 11, 1962, in Bountiful, Utah.
He learned his mechanical skills while in the Air Force and used that skill well during the rest of his life. After he was discharged from the Air Force, he was an aircraft mechanic for Continental Airlines in Cheyenne, Wyoming. In 1961, he worked at Vandenberg Air Force Base in the Atlas missile program. From 1963-1968, Marv worked on Saturn rockets for North American Rockwell in California and Mississippi. In 1971, he worked as a pipefitter for Reynolds Metal in Chicago, Illinois. In 1975, Marv and his family moved to Richland where he was a pipefitter for Plumbers and Steamfitters Local 598 at the Hanford site. During that time he also spent 18 months in Moscow, Russia, working on the American Embassy.
Marv liked being outdoors, fishing and hunting pheasant whenever he could. He often befriended the neighbors’ hunting dogs and took them on outings. He also liked to work in the yard and play pinochle and hearts with his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Ray and Russell, and his sister Wilma.
He is survived by his wife, Sandy; daughters Cathy (Dave) Anderson of Richland; Stacey (Roy) Cahill of Shasta Lake, CA; son Jim (Tara) Sager of Portland, OR; and six grandkids. He is also survived by his sisters Velma Roobal, Eula (Russ) Schoneman, and brother Harold (Betty) Sager.
The memorial service will be Saturday, March 12, at 10:00 a.m., at Memories at Sunset Event Center in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
