GLENNA Hawthorne Obituary

February 16, 1929-February 23, 2011

Jo Hawthorne, 82, passed away Wednesday, February 23 at Kadlec Hospital in Richland, Washington, after a 3-year struggle with pulmonary fibrosis with her 3 children at her side.

Jo was born in Fairmont, West Virginia, on February 16, 1929, to Clyde and Bea Garlow. When she was six years old, they moved to Elkins, West Virginia, where she lived and attended school. In 1944, with her family, she moved to Ellensburg, Washington, where she met and fell in love with John Hawthorne. They were married on February 14, 1948, and farmed in the Woldale area on Reecer Creek Road, until John passed away on February 3, 1976, at age 52. Jo later sold the farm in 1984 and moved to Ellensburg. Jo sold Avon for 18 years, was a hostess at Perkins Restaurant for 5 years and worked at Berry's department store for 10 years as manager in the children's department. After retiring in 1992, she moved to the Tri-Cities to be closer to her daughters.

Jo is survived by her three children: Dan (Sherry) Hawthorne, Vancouver, Washington, Carol (Larry) Henifin, Richland, Washington, and Cindy Chapton, Richland, Washington; five grandchildren, Jennifer Chapton, John Henifin, Alana Henifin, Bryant Hawthorne and Kallen Hawthorne Gatherer; brother, Eugene (Polly) Garlow, Beckley, West Virginia; nephews, Steven and Kevin Garlow, Beckley, West Virginia; nieces, Patty Whitman, Seattle, and Susan (Jim) Hanson, Ellensburg; Jo's Very Special friend Vince Graaff, Ellensburg.

Proceeding her in death are her beloved husband, John, parents Clyde and Bea Garlow, in-laws, Bert and Clara Hawthorne and Marge and Bill Nevins.

In lieu of flowers, send memorials to the Lung Association or to any charity of your choice.

Viewing will be held at Affordable Funeral Care Friday, February 25 from 5:00pm-7:00pm. A sharing of memories will be held at Chestnut Street Baptist Church, on Saturday, February 26 at 2:00pm.

I am deeply sorry to hear of Jo's passing. She was a wonderful lady and taught me many lessons in the short time I got to spend with her at Richland Rehab. You are all blessed to have had her as your mother. Take care and God Bless you at this time and always.

I am so sorry you lost your mother, Carol. I remember all the times she visited at our daycare. What a wonderful person she was. She was one of the kindest people I've ever met. She will be missed. I hope you and your family are doing ok. Hang in there, it will get better. Thinking of all of you with deepest sympathy.

Cindy, Dan and Carol,

I'm so sorry for your loss. Your Mom was a great lady and my 2nd Mom back in my Jr High years. Dan was my best friend and we often spent Friday or Saturday night at each others homes. I still remember Jo coming into the bedroom in the morning to wake us up by sprinkling cold water on our faces! Considering that we'd probably kept her and John awake half the night laughing and carrying on, we got off pretty easy.

I will always remember the Hawthorne family with much fondness.
