Maria Gonzalez Elzea of Othello, died Monday April 11, 2011, at her home with her family at her side.
Maria was born on April 9, 1924, in Bonneville, Wyoming, to Manuel and Antonia (Garcia) Gonzalez. Her family worked on farms, following the harvest through the western United States. They settled in Peidras Negras Coahulia, MX, working the harvest spring through summer and returning home fall and winter. Maria met Jorge Sanchez in Eagle Pass, TX. They married in 1940. In 1945, they settled in Mabton, WA. Jorge died in 1959. Maria moved to Othello in 1964. There she went to work for Chef Ready as a laborer. She married Charlie Elzea in 1967. Maria worked for Chef Ready for several years then went to work for Western Cold Store. In 1982, Maria's daughter Josephine passed away and Maria quit work to raise her children.
Maria was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. She was known for her cooking, she always made 'Granny's tamales' for the church to sell at the fair, often selling out her product before anyone else's. She was an avid Gardner growing roses and vegetables for many to enjoy. She canned much of what she grew as well as fruits, juices and meats. Maria loved being in the kitchen, when she would visit her family she would take over their kitchen and cook for everyone.
Maria is preceded in death by her parents, her husbands Jorge and Charlie and a daughter Josephine. She is survived by her children Gloria (Erasmo) Arredondo of Mabton, Ida Presley of West Liberty, IO; Irma Sanchez of Santa Clara, CA; and Selina (Sergio) Zamora of West Liberty, IO; her son Joe Sanchez of Pasco, WA; and Josephina's children Daniel Sepulveda of Keene, NH and Denise Barajas Sanchez of Othello, 16 grandchildren, 38 greatgrandchildren and 8 great-greatgrandchildren.
Family and friends will be able to view Maria's remains at Stevens Funeral Chapel Thursday from 8:30 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday April 14, 2011, with burial to follow at Bess Hampton Memorial Gardens. Services are under the direction of Stevens Funeral Chapel.
