Nov 19, 1928 - Mar 7, 2013

Our dearest Elisabeth (Lisl, Oma) passed away peacefully in her North Vancouver home on March 7, 2013, surrounded by her loving family. She leaves behind her beloved husband of 53 years, Patrick, her much loved children Ann, Dorli (Robert), Wendy (Fergus) and John (Cathy), and cherished grand-children, Margot, Ryan, William, Henry and Simon. Pre-deceased by her brother Christoph in Vienna, and survived by her twin sister Adelina and nieces and nephews in Austria.

Lisl was born to Herbert and Dorothea von Bandian in Vienna on November 19, 1928. She enjoyed a charmed childhood and told of happy family times playing games and of lakeside summer holidays. Living through WWII brought out Lisl's resourcefulness and resilience which served her well for the rest of her life. Blessed with a gift for numbers and natural organizational skills, Lisl enjoyed working in hotel management in Switzerland, Italy, the Bahamas, the US and Canada. She followed her brother Christoph to Toronto in 1956. While working at the Banff Springs Hotel, Lisl met Patrick on the hotel tennis courts. They married in 1959 and began family life in Calgary where their four children were born.

Lisl was passionate about being a wife, mother, homemaker and grandmother, and was a lifelong source of unconditional love, acceptance and care. Lisl filled our many family homes with warmth, love and laughter in Calgary, Canberra Australia, Aylmer Quebec, and West and North Vancouver. She was refreshingly straight-to-the-point, a loyal friend and gracious host, and her easy manner and curiosity endeared her to all who met and knew her. Ever practical and creative, Lisl sewed clothing for herself and her children, tended vast vegetable gardens, prepared delicious food, and made bread six loaves at a time. A fun-loving and down-to-earth woman, Lisl was always willing to try new things and support Patrick's passions and career. She enjoyed classical music, walks in the fresh air and hikes in the mountains, especially the Rockies. She relished raucous games of tennis with family and friends, recent trips to Maui and Europe, and reading three daily papers with her feet up. Lisl will be missed by all and remembered in the innumerable ways she graced our lives.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the North Shore Hospice Society so that others might enjoy the loving care that Lisl received in her final weeks (www.northshorehospice.ca). Our family is grateful for the fine care and kindness given to Lisl by her doctors, nurses, and caregivers. A Celebration of Life will take place at 2 pm on Sunday, April 14, 2013 at St. Catherine's Anglican Church, 1058 Ridgewood Drive, North Vancouver.
