Francis Joseph Cunningham, Jr. PORTLAND ,OR - Francis Joseph Cunningham, Jr. 90 of Portland OR passed away in his sleep at 8:17 AM on 2/22/13 after a brief illness. Born in Albany, NY on June 22, 1922, he was the son of Francis Joseph Cunningham Sr. and Anna Schoof. He was raised and educated in Albany, NY graduating in 1941 from Albany High School where he was co-captain of the school basketball team and co-quarterback of his football team. He turned down full scholarships for basketball at Norte Dame and football at Hamilton College to join the Navy. He served on LST (Landing Ship Tank) 372 and was promoted to Chief, supervising the engine room. His ship saw action in North Africa, Sicily, Italy and participated in the D-Day invasion on Omaha beach in France. Before going on to Japan he married Isobel Jane Liness on January 1, 1945. He returned home to Albany and worked as a metal lather and structural steel ironworker. He worked on many buildings in NY including the Empire State Plaza in Albany, NY. He moved with his son Peter to Oregon after the death of his beloved wife Isobel. He is survived by his son Timothy M. Cunningham of Livingston, MT; daughter Karin Cunningham Duffy (Brendan) of Dublin Ireland, and son Peter S. Cunningham (Wade Meadors) of Portland, OR; & former or current daughters-in-law Colleen Adams of Albany, NY; Sheryl Kennedy of Indianapolis, IN; Candace Hart Stowell of Carson City, NV & Paula Cunningham of Scotia, NY. Eleven grandchildren and six great grand children. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and two brothers, his wife and his eldest son Michael T Cunningham, decorated Navy war hero from Vietnam buried in Arlington National Cemetery. An interment of his ashes with full military honors will be open to the public at Willamette National Cemetery at 12:00 noon, Tuesday February 26t in Portland, OR. His wife's ashes will be placed with his per his wishes. In lieu of flowers, those desiring to make contributions in memory of Frank may do so to the Trinity Institute, 15 Trinity Place, Albany, NY or the Equity Foundation of Portland, OR.
