THE VILLAGES, Fla. - Gene R. Bowen, 75, departed this life with the love of his family Wednesday, June 12, 2013, in The Villages, Fla.
Gene was born Sept. 21, 1937, in Bennington, Vt., and was the son of the late Wilbur Clark and Jane (Roberts) Bowen. He had resided in Watervliet, N.Y., Wynantskill, N.Y., and, most recently, in The Villages, Fla.
Gene was a graduate of Watervliet High School and was an Army
veteran of the Korean War
, having served his country honorably from Oct. 18, 1955, until Oct. 17, 1958.
He was a 40-year employee of Nycomed (formerly Sterling Drug Co.) in Rensselaer, from where he retired as a production supervisor Feb. 1, 1998.
Gene was a longtime member of the BPOE
(Elks) Lodge, No. 1500 in Watervliet, N.Y., and enjoyed golfing, crossword puzzles and bowling.
An avid fan of all sports, Gene particularly enjoyed professional baseball and football and every year looked forward to each sports playoffs, World Series and Superbowl. He followed the New York Yankees, Atlanta Braves and New York Giants and for many years enjoyed attending the Braves spring training in Orlando, Fla.
He was a communicant of St. Timothy Catholic Community in Lady Lake, Fla.
His many friends and neighbors are invited to attend a memorial Mass, which will be celebrated at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 25, 2013, at St. Timothy's.
Gene was the much-loved husband for 54 years of Mary June (Walker) Bowen, to whom he was married May 17, 1959, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Watervliet. He is also survived by his children, Grace E. Bowen, Elizabeth A. (Charles) Vogel, Jeanine M. (David) Broughel and Michael W. Bowen; his cherished grandchildren, Andrew M. and Erin M. Broughel; his dear brother, William C. (Sandra) Bowen; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, James (late Sandra) Walker, Linda R. (Edward) Hedman, Kenneth F. (Debra) Walker and Lawrence D. (Ann) Walker; as well as several nieces and nephews.
The funeral for Gene will be held at 9:15 a.m. Tuesday, June 18, 2013, from the Parker Bros. Memorial, 2013 Broadway in Watervliet and at 10 a.m. in the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 25th Street and 7th Avenue, Watervliet, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. L. Edward Deimeke, pastor. Entombment will follow at North American Saints Mausoleum at St. Agnes Cemetery in Menands.
Friends are invited to attend and may also visit with Gene's family from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, June 17, at the funeral home.
