GREEN ISLAND - Joseph M. DeMento, 77, died Saturday, October 26, 2013 at The Springs Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Troy. He was the beloved husband of the late Maureen Pitcher DeMento, who died in 2002.
A native and lifelong resident of Green Island, he was son of the late Rocco and Theresa Cericola DeMento. Joe was a hard worker and had been employed through the years by the former Standard Block Company in Green Island, The Cable Shoppe in Albany, Lanthier's Grove in Latham and Franklin Plaza in Troy. He served in the Army
National Guard for 23 years. He was a member and Past Grand Knight of the Green Island K of C, a member of the Green Island Senior Citizens, Green Island Italian Fraternal Society, the Legnard-Curtin American Legion Post and the Vagabond Club, both in Green Island. Joe was also a former Boy Scout Troop Leader and a communicant of the former St. Joseph's Church in Green Island.
He is the devoted father of James DeMento of Green Island, Joseph (Christine) DeMento of Rotterdam, John (Christine) DeMento of Watervliet and Mary (Earl) Wilmot of Green Island and loving brother of Ann Marie (late Joseph) Lazzaro of Green Island. Joe is also survived by several grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the McNulty Funeral Home, 147 Hudson Avenue, Green Island. Interment will be beside his wife, Maureen, in the Eagle Mills Cemetery in Brunswick. Calling hours will be on Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Green Island Senior Citizens, 5 George Street, Green Island, NY 12183, to carry on the wonderful activities and meals provided for the Seniors.
