Shirley A. Hughes WYNANTSKILL - Shirley A. Edwards Hughes, age 80, beloved wife of Kenneth E. Hughes Sr., died on Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at Samaritan Hospital in Troy surrounded by her loving family. Born in Poughkeepsie, she was the daughter of the late William and Catherine Donohue Edwards. She was a graduate of School 12 in Troy and Troy High School, Class of 1951. Mrs. Hughes was a homemaker and housewife and resided in Wynantskill the past 57 years. She was a longtime communicant of St. Jude the Apostle Church in Wynantskill, a volunteer for Twin Town Little League and an Election Inspector for North Greenbush. Mrs. Hughes was an avid supporter of her children and grandchildren's many activities. She was a lifelong fan of the NY Yankees and the NY Jets. The family would like to thank the staff of Samaritan Hospital, 6th floor for the kind care they gave Shirley. Survivors in addition to her husband include her 3 children, Karen (Mark) Wertel of Ballston Spa, Kenneth (Michele) Hughes and William (Maureen) Hughes, both of Troy, her 7 grandchildren, William, Meghan, Katie, Zachary and Michael Hughes and Jessica and Jacquelyn Wertel, her 2 sisters, Rosemary (James) Suriano of Troy and Elizabeth (Thomas) Heller of Averill Park and her brother, Michael (Marj) Edwards of Middletown, NY. She was predeceased by a brother, William Edwards and a sister, Catherine Felter. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. The funeral will be from Thomas S. Connolly Funeral Home, 294 Whiteview Rd., Wynantskill on Friday at 8:45 A.M and at 9:30 A.M. from St. Jude the Apostle Church. Wynantskill, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Anthony Ligato, pastor. Burial will follow in Elmwood Hill Cemetery, Troy. Calling hours will be at the funeral home today from 4 to 7 P.M. Donations to St. Jude the Apostle Church Memorial Fund, 43 Brookside Ave., Wynantskill, NY 12198 in memory of Mrs. Hughes would be appreciated.
