Garrett “Gary” Hartshorn TROY – Garrett “Gary” Hartshorn, 64, formerly of Green Island, died Wednesday, April 16, 2014 at the Samaritan Hospital in Troy, with his family by his side. Born in Green Island, son of William (Shirley) Hartshorn and the late Margaret Lewis Hartshorn, he resided in Green Island until moving to Troy 10 years ago. Gary proudly served in the U S Coast Guard during the Vietnam War. He had been employed by the Bendix Corporation in the 1970’s and was a tractor trailer driver for several area businesses in the 1980’s. He has been a self-employed contractor in the area for many years. Gary was a former member and Commander of the Legnard-Curtin American Legion Post 927 in Green Island and was presently a member of the North Albany American Legion Post 1610. In addition to his father, he is survived by his wife, Sandy Carter Hartshorn; his daughter, Kristy (Kirk) Avery of Green Island; his granddaughter, Katherine Smith of Green Island; his brothers, Paul (Janet DuBray) Hartshorn of Green Island and Richard (Angela) Hartshorn of Petersburg. Gary was predeceased by his brother, Edmund in 2011. Committal services, with full military honors, will be held on Tuesday, April 22, 2014 at 3:00 p.m. at Saratoga National Cemetery. Attendees are asked to line up at the front gate by 2:45 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Gary may be made to the North Albany American Legion Post 1610, 35 North First Street, Albany, NY 12204.
