Joseph M. Hostig, Sr. WATERFORD – Joseph M. Hostig, Sr., 80, of Waterford, co-founder of B & J Auto Supply, died on Saturday, November 17, 2012 after a brief illness. Joe was the beloved husband for 57 years, of Joan A. Herring Hostig; the loving father of Judith A. (Gerard) Johnson of Phoenixville, PA and Joseph M. Hostig, Jr. of Waterford, NY; the most proud grandfather of Meghan Elizabeth and Sarah Catherine Johnson and David Joseph and Jonathan William Hostig; the dear brother of the late Harry, William and Michael Hostig. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews. The youngest son of the late Michael and Mary Vetoich Hostig, Joe was born at home in Maplewood, NY on July 23, 1932. He attended the former St. Nicholas School in Watervliet, was a graduate of Catholic Central High School in Troy and later served his country in the army during the
. In 1950, Joe and his brother Bill founded B&J Service on Saratoga Avenue in Waterford. At the time of his retirement in 2002, B&J Auto Supply had grown to include five retail/wholesale outlets throughout the Capital District. As a businessman, Joe strove to be fair to all who came to him. He remained active after his retirement, mentoring to others to start or grow their own businesses. Joe was a generous man, proud to have helped and influenced many small-business entrepreneurs in the local community. Along with his son, Joe, Jr., and grandson, David, Joe was a driving force behind the revival of Normanside Country Club in Delmar. He was a longtime member of the Knights of Columbus, the Watervliet Lodge of Elks # 1500, the American Legion, the F.B. Peck Hose Fire Company of Waterford and was a communicant of St. Mary's Church in Crescent. Relatives and friends are invited to call at the Philip J. Brendese Funeral Home, 133 Broad Street (Route 32) Waterford on Tuesday from 4 PM until 8 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday at 11 AM in St. Mary's Church, 86 Church Hill Road, Crescent. Interment will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Waterford.
